Rebuild the shoulder without surgery

Surgical Intervention suggested for a Shoulder injury? Seeking a surgery less treatment?

If surgical intervention is suggested do not lose heart? Do you know most of these cases can be treated successfully with combination of appropriate physiotherapy and optimal rehabilitation designed specifically for the earliest return to their sport, dance, martial arts, work and leisure pursuits.

Isn’t surgery the fastest way back?
A patient with problems of the rotator cuff or shoulder impingement may be made to think so, however surgery is still an invasive procedure that requires lengthy recovery that may be incomplete and again requires physical therapy to accomplish total recovery. Further, even so called successful surgeries may still fail to relieve all the pain and that shoulder weakness may persist.

Complications of surgery may also include nerve damage, a keloid or a bad surgical scar, etc.

Rebuilding the shoulder without surgery

Shoulder injuries can be divided into two groups – more commonly, and the first to be discussed is the wear and tear injury to the tendons. The shoulder tendons are main players in rotator cuff problems, shoulder impingement, osteoarthritis and disorders of pain and weakness that get worse over time.

The symptoms of tendon injury are many and include inflammation of the tendons (tendonitis), and/or bursitis, inflammation of the bursa (the protective sac that sits between the bones of the shoulders and allows the tendons the space they need to move.)

Everyone would agree treating the tendons and allowing the tendons to function normally would be the optimal treatment in shoulder pain, but that is where the agreement ends.

The second scenario involving tendon damage is in the event of catastrophic injury that results in 100% tearing of the rotator cuff tendons in previously healthy shoulders. These are injuries that occur in sports, car accidents or a situation where the shoulder is exposed to sudden extreme force.

A proper diagnosis of shoulder pain is essential to determine the root cause of the problem and the proper method of treatment. Because many shoulder conditions are caused by specific activities, a detailed medical history is an invaluable tool. A physical examination should also include screening for physical abnormalities—swelling, deformity, muscle weakness, and tender areas—and observing the range of shoulder motion—how far and in which directions the arm can be moved. Most of the cases, shoulder problems involve the soft tissues—muscles, ligaments, and tendons—rather than the bones.

With over 25 years of experience our Sports Medicine consultant of SPARRC, Dr Kannan Pugazhendi has designed special physical therapy program which has healed and returned many International Athletes, Dancers and Cine celebrities to their field of specializations. Dear Doctor

I had underwent rehabilitation for my right shoulder pain, (impingement), for 15 days at Anna Nagar centre, prior to that 3 days of treatment Ultra sound and trigger point therapy, during sept-oct 2012. My trainer was Mr.Wesley. I was completely rid of my pain and had normal physical acitivity including weight training in the gym, and also swimming.

But i had a sudden pain during the month of Jan 2015 ( while working in the gym), and i stopped my workouts, and till date have not gone back, but since then the pain is on and off, now for the past month its unbearable, and that too now on both shoulders.

    Pl advise.

    Thanks and regards
